EP. 39 - Enough: How Do You Know When You Have Enough?

More is everywhere. But where is enough?

Money. Work. Fitness. Achievement. Adventure. Information. Growth. Ambition.

Modern life is remarkably good at telling us what to pursue, but much less interested in telling us when to stop.

In this episode, Evan Sutter explores the idea of enough and why it might be one of the more difficult questions we can ask when thinking about a good life.

Is enough a number? A feeling? A decision? Something we discover only after we've gone too far?

And perhaps the more uncomfortable question:

If we don't decide what enough means, who—or what—will decide it for us?

The conversation continues the philosophical thread of recent episodes:

  • Death: What matters?

  • Attention: Where is my life actually going?

  • Enough: When is it enough?

Evan explores the tension between ambition and contentment, asking whether “more” is really the problem—or whether the more important question is more in service of what?

Because building a business for freedom can eventually leave you with no freedom. Pursuing money for security can become an endless pursuit of more. And ambition that once served a meaningful life can quietly become the thing around which the entire life is organised.

Perhaps knowing enough doesn't diminish ambition.

Perhaps it frees ambition from desperation.

And perhaps the real challenge is learning to recognise the difference between ambition and restlessness wearing ambition's clothes.

EP. 34 - The Strength of a Balanced Life - Why the Good Life Needs Range

In this episode, I reflect on something I've slowly changed my mind about over the years.

Perhaps balance isn't about slowing down.

Perhaps it's about having enough range.

When work becomes overwhelming, can you move into nature?

When your body needs recovery, can you read instead of run?

When business becomes stressful, can you create, write, paddle, or simply rest long enough to return with fresh perspective?

I also explore how ideas from Polyvagal Theory have influenced my own thinking. Rather than living permanently in a state of low-grade stress ("yellow"), maybe the goal is learning to recognise where we are—and gently finding our way back to the calm, creative, present state where our best work actually happens.

Along the way, I share stories about running, building SwiftReporter, interests, my Pop, and ambition.

In this episode:

  • Why external success can hide an unhealthy life.

  • The startup story that completely reframed my thinking about ambition.

  • What building SwiftReporter continues to teach me about stress and presence.

  • The moment my daughter pulled me away from my phone—and why it still stays with me.

  • What paddling the Hunter River taught me about struggle, patience, and control.

  • The simple life lesson my grandfather ("Pop") shared that has become more valuable every year.

  • Why we've confused exhaustion with progress.

  • The difference between hard days and hard lives.

  • A quieter, broader definition of success.
