The Science of Flourishing | Evan Sutter

For years, I have obsessed over a single question: How do we architect environments that actively generate human flourishing?

Through my foundational research with Hapzly and my ongoing consulting work, I have delivered these principles to over 10,000 people across three continents. What I have found is that corporate happiness is not an abstract concept or a superficial perk. It is a structural baseline that can be defined, measured, and optimized for long-term success.

The Global Methodology

To understand how a business can genuinely generate wellbeing, we cannot look at business in a vacuum. Our methodology synthesizes data from three distinct spheres:

Global Policy

Analyzing the Gross National Happiness (GNH) index pioneered by the Government of Bhutan, alongside the socioeconomic structures of consistently top-ranking nations like Denmark, Australia, and Canada.

Academic Frameworks

Integrating the clinical definitions established by the Happiness Research Institute, alongside Martin Seligman’s PERMA model of wellbeing (Positive Emotions, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, and Accomplishment).

Corporate Pioneers

Deconstructing the endogenous and exogenous practices of leading sustainable businesses, such as Patagonia and Koninklijke Philips, to bridge the gap between theory and execution.

1. The Individual Perspective

When defining happiness within an organization, we must first look at the individual. The Happiness Research Institute defines wellbeing across three dimensions: Cognitive (overall life satisfaction), Affective (daily emotional experiences), and Eudemonic (a deep sense of purpose and meaning). To achieve this holistic state, an individual requires eight essential pillars:

Decent Work
Safe conditions, fair wages, and baseline security.
Resource Command
Economic autonomy and purchasing power.
Personal Freedom
The agency to develop personally and professionally.
Good Governance
Operating within an environment of respect and security.
Social Trust
Belonging to a community with strong, supportive relationships.
Mindfulness & Virtue
The cultivation of ethics, integrity, and mental clarity.
Positive Emotion
Regular experiences of enjoyment, stimulation, and connection.
Deep Meaning
A profound sense of usefulness, impact, and fulfillment.

2. The Business Perspective

How does a business actively support those eight pillars?

"Humans need to be considered in all contexts: as moral agents, members of society, agents in the economy, and parts of Nature itself." — Pope Francis

A business is a living ecosystem with both an endogenous function (how it manages its people) and an exogenous function (how it interacts with the world). To foster genuine flourishing, a business must take responsibility for its impact across four core stakeholders: The Internal Wellbeing of its Employees, the Happiness of its Customers, and its Responsibilities toward the Environment and the Community.
